1. Plan Ahead for Safety

• Create an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, and flashlights. Don’t forget a backup supply of any assistive devices such as canes or walkers if needed.
• Secure Important Documents: Keep all critical documents in a waterproof container.
• Evacuation Plan: Make sure your evacuation route is accessible for everyone, especially those with mobility challenges.
• Communication: Have a list of emergency contacts and ways to communicate, especially if power or internet goes out.
2. Lifting Techniques for Hurricane Preparation

When preparing your home for a hurricane, you may need to lift heavy items like shutters or sandbags. Here are some safe lifting tips to protect your back and joints:
•Use Proper Form: Always lift with your legs, not your back. Bend your knees, keep your back straight, and avoid twisting your torso while lifting.
• Keep Objects Close to Your Body: When lifting something heavy like a sandbag, hold it close to your body. This helps reduce strain on your arms and back.
• Ask for Help: Never be afraid to ask for assistance. If a task feels too heavy, recruit family members, neighbors, or professional help.
• Take Breaks: Avoid overexertion. Take frequent breaks, especially in hot weather.
• Use Tools When Possible: Use dollies, carts, or sliders to move heavy objects to minimize the strain on your body.
