Hurricane Season Prep: Stay Safe, Stay Strong, Stay Ready

When a storm is coming, most people think about canned goods, batteries, and gas.

But at our clinic, we think about something just as important: your safety and health.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare this hurricane season — and avoid unnecessary injuries or setbacks.

🧹 1. Clear the Pathways

Before the storm:

  • Move throw rugs, extension cords, or any tripping hazards out of walkways.

  • Make sure you have a clear path to your bathroom, bedroom, and front door.

  • Consider installing motion-sensor night lights or using flashlights if power goes out.

💧 2. Stock Up on Hydration

When it’s humid and stressful, dehydration sneaks up fast.

  • Keep a case of bottled water or fill clean pitchers ahead of time.

  • Add an electrolyte supplement to your kit — they help your body absorb fluids better and prevent fatigue or dizziness.

  • Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol, especially if you’re indoors without A/C.

💊 3. Prepare Medications & Medical Devices

  • Fill any prescriptions in advance — don’t wait until it’s too late.

  • Charge your mobility devices (scooters, power chairs) fully if they’re electric.

  • Keep a printed list of medications, allergies, and emergency contacts.

🚪 4. Avoid the “Just One More Thing” Injury

Falls and strains often happen when people rush to:

  • Move furniture

  • Bring things in from outside

  • Climb ladders or step stools

Ask for help. Last year I was informed the local sheriffs department put together a team to put up shutters for those who needed help!

📦 5. Create a “Grab-and-Go” Safety Kit

Include:

  • Flashlight, batteries

  • A whistle

  • Extra glasses/hearing aids

  • Electrolytes or snacks

  • Any assistive devices like canes or walkers

🧘 6. Stay Calm, Stay Moving

If you’re indoors for long periods:

  • Do gentle stretches

  • Walk laps inside or do seated leg/ankle pumps

  • Keep circulation moving and stiffness away
